What is ethology?
Ethology is the science that studies animal behaviour. The term ethology comes from the Greek ethos (custom, behaviour) and logos (reasoning, study, science).
Clinical ethology is a speciality of veterinary medicine that deals with behavioural problems in companion animals. An ethologist is therefore a veterinary behaviourist, trained to diagnose and treat problems such as:
- Inappropriate elimination (urination/defecation in inappropriate places)
- Aggressiveness
- Compulsive behaviours
- Introduction of new animals
- Other behavioural problems
- Separation anxiety
- Stress (moving house, building work, babies...)
- Cognitive dysfunction in geriatric animals
- Fears and phobias (noises, people, other animals...)
