What is ethology?

Ethology is the science that studies animal behaviour. The term ethology comes from the Greek ethos (custom, behaviour) and logos (reasoning, study, science).

Clinical ethology is a speciality of veterinary medicine that deals with behavioural problems in companion animals. An ethologist is therefore a veterinary behaviourist, trained to diagnose and treat problems such as:

  • Inappropriate elimination (urination/defecation in inappropriate places)
  • Aggressiveness
  • Compulsive behaviours
  • Introduction of new animals
  • Other behavioural problems
  • Separation anxiety
  • Stress (moving house, building work, babies...)
  • Cognitive dysfunction in geriatric animals
  • Fears and phobias (noises, people, other animals...)
